2010 Concert Season:
Dr. Tien was invited as a guest speaker and performer at the Forum on the Development of Chinese Ethnic Music and Celebration of Professor Tian Liantao's 80th Birthday on November 5-6, 2010, Beijing, China. The event was hosted by the Central University of Minorities and the Central Conservatory of China, in Beijing. Accompanied by the pianist Wang Yue, Dr. Tien performed and presented “Children of the Red River” and “Capriccio Himalaya.” Both compositions were written for her by her father, Professor Tian Liantao and her mother Professor Song Tao, who incorporated themes from folk songs of the Yi and Tibetan nationalities of China.

2008 Concert Season:
Dr. Tien presented a lecture recital at the National Endowment of Humanities Summer Institute, College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, on July 15, 2008. She was accompanied by pianist Vladimir Odinokikh. Her lecture was titled “Contemporary Music by Tibetan and Chinese Composers”. The program included seven compositions by seven composers: Mingyur Tendzin “Circle of Life,” Penpa Dawa “Five Images,” Jorgar “Zhou Xie,” Puburincen “Jie Xie,” Lobsang Jigme “Thinking of Amala” (for cello and piano), Tian Liantao, and Song Tao “Capriccio Himalaya” (for cello and piano). Dr. Tien interviewed all seven composers during her trips to Beijing and Lhasa. The musical portion of her lecture included selections of a recording of the Concert of the Works of the First Batch of Tibetan Composers Students of the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing. The lecture recital was well received by the audience and the evening ended with a lively question and answer section.
2009 Concert Season:
Dr. Tien performed as solo cellist with the Department of Theatre, College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA, in the production of “Mimpi” at the 31st Bali Arts Festival that was held in June 24-27, 2009. The production is an original dance drama created by Professor Lynn Kremer, combining Indonesian folk tales, poetry, dancing, costumes, gamelan orchestra and music, with piano and cello. Dr. I Nyoman Sedana wrote in his congratulatory article: “Musically, there was a perfect merger of two different kinds of music, the moment when the cello and the gamelan orchestra played together.” The Jakarta Post wrote: “Another exceptional contribution to the performance was made by Ning Tien, whose cello filled the air with tones of exquisite melancholy”.
